Fate leads the willing and drags along the reluctant.’ – Seneca

I walk into the lobby of the albergue where there is much commotion.  A young man stands in the centre crying, and is being hugged by his girlfriend.  His Camino family stand around close by.

‘What’s going on?’ I ask the hospitalera.

‘Well, ‘he’s just been told that his father died last night; it was unexpected.  Now, he’s waiting for the taxi to take him to the bus station and the journey back home’.

‘That’s not all. This same young man, last night, forcibly told a snoring pilgrim in his mid-sixties to leave the dormitory and sleep in the corridor outside.  The man did as he was told.  His Camino family tell me that his behaviour at other albergues had been similar at times.’

Whether positive or negative, one definition of ‘fate’ is ‘something that unavoidably befalls a person’ through events that are irrational and impersonal in character.

Did ‘fate’ fill your Camino in some way?  Perhaps you:

  • Unexpectedly met someone who brought a whole ‘different’ you out into the world.

  • Received news which changed everything

  • Lost something of real ‘value’ but found something of greater ‘value’ to fill its place

  • Fully surrendered to let the hands of fate guide your way

  • Embraced the ‘love of your fate’ (amor fati) and found new meaning in the process

  • Battled your fate with interesting results.
