Camino Wisdom Stories

The geographic pilgrimage is the symbolic acting out of an inner journey. The inner journey is the interpolation of the meanings and signs of the outer pilgrimage.  One can have one without the other. It is best to have both.”

~Thomas Merton, American Trappist monk and priest, 1964

Beyond the physical journey of pilgrimage is the imagined journey that many use to express the personal meaning and spiritual purpose of their pilgrimage.  Art is often the vehicle of this expression, which can be manifested using storytelling, writing, poetry, song, or illustration. When shared with others, this expression represents “returning with the elixir” in context of the Hero’s Journey.

For this month’s event, we have a special guest, a regular participant at Camino Wisdom Stories, and presenter at the American Pilgrims annual gathering, Martin Peña.

After his first Camino in 2018, Martin discovered that he was able to extend his pilgrimage and illustrate his vision of the Camino by expressing it as his own personal mythology, through creative arrangement of narratives, images and compositional elements.

Join us for a conversation with special guest, Martin Peña, and discover:

·       What originally drew Martin to the Camino

·       His unique way of seeing the Camino in a non-linear way

·       How and why he began to creatively arrange his photos to make sense of the themes of the Camino

·       How his personal mythology has since unfolded

·       The challenges he faced in sharing his gift in the world

·       How this creative expression after his Camino has supported Martin on the bigger journey of his life

·       The importance of and how we can engage in similar creative ways when looking at our Camino journeys
